There are tens of thousands of papers, and the ones that look best on a screen are often the ones that overwhelm a real room. Three mistakes account for almost all of the regret:
- The pattern is too small. A small print over every wall of a small room turns into busy texture. A large one makes the walls recede.
- The colour fights the room. The paper is chosen first, and then it argues with the stone, the metal and the floor that were already there.
- The edges are white. A white ceiling and white trim stop the paper in hard lines and make the room look unfinished.

- Send two photographs of the room, the rough width of the main wall, and one line on how you want it to feel. Phone photos are fine.
- Within 48 hours you receive three papers chosen for that room, each with two lines on why.
- With each paper: the pattern name, code and colourway, where to buy it, the Farrow & Ball colour and finish for the trim and ceiling, and how many rolls your room needs with the repeat accounted for.
Saw a paper in a photograph and want to find it? Send the photo too. Identifying a paper from a picture is part of the job — and if it is discontinued or was a one-off commission, you will be told plainly and given the closest papers that do the same thing.

A paint colour consultant chooses a colour. A wallpaper consultation chooses a colour, a pattern, a scale and a direction for the whole room at once — and the trim, ceiling and paint follow from it. In a powder room, a butler’s pantry or a small bedroom, the paper is the decision everything else agrees with. That is why it is worth getting right first.
