Powder Room Ceiling IdeasThe fifth wall is the one everyone forgets.

In a powder room you see more ceiling than in any other room in the house — it’s small, it’s close, and you’re standing still. Leave it flat white and the room has a lid. There are three better answers.

Why a white ceiling makes a powder room look smaller

When the walls are papered or coloured, a flat white ceiling draws a hard line all the way round the top of the room. That line tells you exactly where the room ends — which, in a powder room, is very close. It also looks unfinished, as if the decorating stopped a foot short.

Colour on the ceiling does the opposite. The eye can’t find the edge, so the room stops reading as a box.

1. Carry the wallpaper over the ceiling

Papering the ceiling with the same paper as the walls is the most immersive answer: no edges at all, a true jewel box. It works best with a pattern that has no obvious up and down — a trailing vine, an all-over botanical, a small geometric — and in a room with a simple ceiling, without a lot of beams or angles.

Ask your paperhanger about it before you order: a ceiling takes extra paper, and not every installer will do one.

2. Lacquer it

A high-gloss ceiling in a colour taken from the paper is my favourite answer for most powder rooms. It’s quieter than papering the ceiling, so it works when the walls are already busy, and the gloss reflects the light from the sconces and the pendant back into the room. A deep teal over a green paper, oxblood over a palm, a soft blue-grey over a chinoiserie.

Gloss shows every flaw underneath, so the plaster has to be properly prepared. That preparation is the real cost of a lacquered ceiling, not the paint.

3. Paint it a colour from the walls

If gloss isn’t possible, an eggshell or flat finish in a colour from the walls still does almost all of the work. Take the colour from the paper’s ground or its deepest shade, never from its lightest. Paint the crown the same colour, so the walls run straight up into the ceiling without a white band in between.

Colour-drenched: the burgundy of the paper’s ground carried over the panelling, the crown and the ceiling.

What about a dark ceiling in a small room?

A dark ceiling does not make a powder room feel lower. In a small room with coloured walls, it makes the ceiling recede, and in a windowless room there is no daylight for it to fight. The rooms that feel cramped are the ones with a bright white lid on top of a dark box.

Which should you choose?

A quiet paper with no obvious direction: paper the ceiling. A busy or directional paper: lacquer or paint the ceiling a colour from it. Panelling or wainscoting below the paper: paint the ceiling and the panelling the same colour and let the paper sit between them.

Questions

Should you wallpaper the ceiling of a powder room?

It works beautifully when the paper has no obvious up and down, such as a trailing vine or an all-over botanical, and the ceiling is simple. With a busy or directional paper, lacquer or paint the ceiling a colour taken from the paper instead.

What colour should a powder room ceiling be?

A colour taken from the walls: the paper’s ground or its deepest shade. A flat white ceiling over papered or coloured walls draws a hard line round the top of the room and makes it look smaller.

Does a dark ceiling make a small room feel smaller?

Not in a powder room with coloured or papered walls. A dark ceiling recedes, and the eye stops finding the edge of the room. A bright white ceiling over dark walls is what makes a small room feel boxed in.

What is a lacquered ceiling?

A ceiling painted in a high-gloss finish, so it reflects light back into the room. It needs very well-prepared plaster, because gloss shows every flaw underneath.

Should the crown moulding match the ceiling or the walls?

In a powder room, paint the crown the same colour as the ceiling, or as the trim if the trim is coloured. Avoid a white crown between a coloured wall and a coloured ceiling.
