Colour drenching means painting the walls, the skirting, the door, the window, the crown and the ceiling all in the same colour. It is the simplest idea in decorating and the most transforming — and it works best in small rooms, where every edge is within arm’s reach.

In a normal room, white trim and a white ceiling outline every edge: where the wall stops, where the door starts, where the ceiling begins. In a small room those edges are all close together, so the space reads as a collection of busy pieces. Drench it, and the lines disappear. The eye can’t find the corners, and the room feels calmer, deeper and more expensive.
Powder rooms, home bars, butler’s pantries, boot rooms, studies, small bedrooms, the end of a corridor. Anywhere small enough that you see every surface at once.
Everything you can: walls, skirting, door and door casing, window and window casing, crown, ceiling, the radiator and any built-in joinery. Cabinetry in a pantry or bar can be the same colour or a deliberate step deeper, but everything architectural should match.
Colours with depth and warmth: oxblood, burgundy, bottle green, olive, ochre, a smoky blue, a deep plaster pink. Pale colours can be drenched too, and a soft drench suits a small bedroom, but in a powder room or a bar the point is atmosphere, and a deep colour gives you far more of it. Avoid cool greys and anything that looks clean on the chart — under warm lamplight they go flat.
The trick that makes a drenched room look considered rather than flat is to keep the colour identical and change the finish: matt or eggshell on the walls, gloss on the trim and the door, and gloss again on the ceiling if the plaster is good enough. The light catches the edges and the mouldings without any change of colour.
You don’t have to choose between paper and a drench. Paper the walls, then take one colour from the paper — usually its ground or its deepest shade — and drench everything else in it: panelling, trim, door, crown, ceiling. The paper becomes the only pattern, set in a frame of one colour.
One metal, ideally unlacquered brass. Stone with some warmth in it. An antique mirror. Warm light from sconces, lamps or lit shelving, never a single overhead light. And something alive: flowers, a candle, a good towel.
Send a photograph of the room and I’ll be in touch with where I’d take it. If you then want the whole room designed — paper, paint, stone, basin, tap, lighting and hardware, every piece named and sourced — a room starts at $750 and takes about a week.
Painting the walls, trim, doors, window, crown and ceiling of a room all in the same color. It removes the white outlines around each surface, so the room reads as one continuous space.
It makes it feel larger and calmer. Without white trim and a white ceiling to mark every edge, the eye cannot find the corners, so a small room feels deeper rather than boxed in.
Keep the color the same and change the sheen: matt or eggshell on the walls, gloss on the trim and door, and gloss on the ceiling if the plaster is well prepared.
Yes. Paper the walls and paint everything else, including panelling, trim, door, crown and ceiling, in one color taken from the paper, usually its ground or deepest shade.
