The rule everyone repeats is that a small room should be painted light to make it look bigger. In practice the opposite is usually true. A pale small room shows you every corner. A dark one hides them — and a powder room, a bar, a pantry or a little bedroom painted deep and lit well feels larger, calmer and far more expensive.

Only when it’s done halfway. A dark wall with a white ceiling, white skirting and white door frames draws a bright outline around every edge of the room, and the eye measures the space by those lines. Take them away — the same deep colour on the walls, the trim and the ceiling — and the eye can’t find where the room ends. The corners recede. The room reads as deeper than it is.
Pale paint does the reverse. In a small room it lights every corner evenly, so you see the whole box at once, exactly as small as it is.
Powder rooms — used for a minute at a time, usually at night, often windowless. The best room in the house for drama.
Home bars and drinks alcoves — a dark lacquer with lit shelving is what makes glassware glow.
Butler’s pantries — dark cabinetry with brass and lit shelves looks like a jeweller’s case rather than a cupboard.
Small bedrooms — a deep, soft colour makes a little bedroom feel enclosed and restful rather than cramped.
Warm darks: oxblood, burgundy, bottle green, olive, a smoky navy, deep ochre, chocolate. They stay rich under lamplight. Cool darks — charcoal, slate, a blue-black with no warmth — tend to go flat and grey in a small room at night. Look at any colour under a warm bulb in the evening before you commit, because that’s how you’ll live with it.
A dark matt wall with gloss trim in the same colour is the classic answer: the walls absorb light and soften, the trim catches it and describes the room. Full lacquer — high gloss on every surface — is the most dramatic and the most demanding, because gloss shows every flaw in the plaster. In a small room it’s worth it.
Warm light, low and close. Sconces at face height with fabric or pleated shades, lit shelving in a bar or pantry, a lamp in a bedroom, a candle anywhere. Avoid recessed downlights: they leave dark walls looking flat and make pools on the floor. The point of a dark room is the glow, and the glow comes from light you can see the source of.
Things that catch light: unlacquered brass, marble with warmth in it, an antique mirror, glass. And something alive — flowers, a candle, a good linen towel. A dark room is a backdrop; it wants a few beautiful things in front of it.
Send a photograph of the room and I’ll be in touch with where I’d take it. If you then want the whole room designed — paper, paint, stone, basin, tap, lighting and hardware, every piece named and sourced — a room starts at $750 and takes about a week.
Often, yes. A deep color carried over the walls, trim and ceiling hides the corners of a small room, so it feels deeper and calmer. It works especially well in powder rooms, home bars, butler’s pantries and small bedrooms.
Only when it is paired with white trim and a white ceiling, which outline every edge. With the same dark color on the walls, trim and ceiling, the edges recede and a small room usually feels larger.
Warm darks such as oxblood, burgundy, bottle green, olive, smoky navy, deep ochre and chocolate. Cool darks like charcoal and slate can look flat and grey under warm evening light.
A matt or eggshell on the walls with gloss trim in the same color is the classic choice. Full high-gloss lacquer is more dramatic but needs very well-prepared plaster.
With warm, visible light sources: sconces at face height with fabric shades, lit shelving, lamps and candles. Avoid recessed downlights, which leave dark walls looking flat.
